My Story

It was a moment straight out of a movie, except it was real, and I was living it. I was sitting with my parents and coach, anxiously awaiting the doctor's verdict, my Olympic dream letter still crumpled in my hand. I had been training for years, pushing my body to its absolute limits to represent East Germany at the Olympics. But the concerned look in my doctor’s eyes was enough to tell me everything was about to change.

“You need to stop sports, or you risk serious, irreversible damage." Those words hit harder than any training session ever could. I had two choices: stop sports, go through a rehab program, and hopefully live a fairly normal life—or, pursue a different kind of dream in the Paralympics. At 17, this wasn’t the life I had envisioned. I felt lost, as if my identity was ripped away in a single moment. All my effort, sacrifice, and dedication seemed pointless. How could I walk away from everything I knew? How could I redefine success when I had only ever measured it in terms of winning? The future I had spent years building towards suddenly evaporated, and I was left to redefine who I was and what my life would be.

I chose the path less taken. Instead of spiraling, I channeled my athlete's mindset into a new life. I moved to England, not even knowing the language fluently, determined to create something meaningful. It wasn’t easy. I started from scratch, navigating a new culture, nurturing a young family, building a career, and learning to trust my resilience. Over 28 years, I developed thousands of leaders in business, eventually discovering the importance of emotional intelligence, empathy, and mindfulness along the way. Now my life took a different turn, but it is richer, more balanced. I learned that leadership isn’t about always winning—it’s about guiding others, embracing challenges, and growing from them.

What I learned from this experience is that sometimes, the toughest choices we face are the ones that shape us the most. My Olympic dream may have ended, but my journey didn’t. It transformed into a mission—one focused on guiding others to become the leaders they wish they had. True leadership isn't about standing on the podium; it's about helping others find their way and creating safe, empowering spaces for them to thrive.
